The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan is a masterpiece of musical theatre. It was an immediate hit in 1885 and, miraculously, remains fresh and topical today. It may well be the most frequently presented musical of all time.
Alternately witty and silly, The Mikado boasts wonderful tunes and gorgeous costumes. It’s set in the fantastical Japanese village of Titipu, where a tailor condemned to death for flirting has become the Lord High Executioner. Every other job in town has been taken over by a sneering Pooh Bah. There’s a disguised prince in love with a lovely maiden and enough plot twists to satisfy everyone.
Find out who’s on the list of candidates for the chopping block, rejoice in The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring and admire the high-spirited Three Little Maids from School. The great Mikado will also set you straight on how ‘to make the punishment fit the crime’ while Katisha makes the Wicked Witch of the West look even-tempered.
As an extra treat, we are pretending that the show is presented by an all-girl’s school with a cast of students and school mistresses. This gives some talented women a chance to take on the juicy male roles they’ve always coveted.
